Three Silences

An empty closet.
Sunlight.
A closing memory.

Hitchhiking

Silence weans absence
From abandoned places, hives
Where childhood toys hide.

Or absence evokes
Silence from discarded combs
And boudoir lipstick.

But there’s no silence
If you really listen. Chalk
Fingerprints each thumb.

Dotted lines outline
The missing. It’s their absence
That you really hear.

Once inside your head,
They won’t shut up, and you don’t
Want them to either.

Holding a thimble
To the light, you need someone
To stitch you back up.
