No one should believe without particulars, and the more particular, the less universal everything becomes. Few share the same dentures. Many authors, though, aspire to write that magic book which contains us all. The more cosmic the generalizations, the easier for everybody to adapt to fit the words. If the public really likes it, they’ll want more of the same. Sameness engenders generic catacombs, like those used for mining coal.
To see the future, however, forget tarot cards, tossing dice with the I Ching, or gazing into a crystal ball. Look instead to your children. For the brief time that they want to be like you, they think that’s the way they’ll get your love. Then the light goes out and you can only watch from the sidelines. The Yoga video loses all its magnetic filings. The magic book’s platitudes go flat like stale champagne.
I grew up in Christian fundamentalism, went to hell, came back, became a Presbyterian then a Buddhist Presbyterian, and now I'm a profane Presbyterian Zen Taoist -- not that I'm into labels or anything. Here's what I've learned so far: The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
