Discernment and Faith

Discernment has to do with how we decide what we decide.

Discernment comes when we reach a crossroads that isn't on our map -- when there's no clear way forward. When we can't get the answers we need from outside ourselves, we have turn to the only other place available to us -- inside.

This is discernment. Its fruits are the answers that arise from within us when we seek insight.

But where do the answers come from? How do we know we can trust them?

We don't. This is why we invented faith.

I must be a very discerning fellow indeed! I lost my map years ago and haven't tried to replace it. Besides, maps are like the weather forecast -- they're only right some of the time and, when they're wrong, they're really, really wrong. :D)

As Stephen Covey points out in his Seven Habits book, a street map of Detroit won't help you find your way to an address in Chicago.
