Giving Forgiveness

To give forgiveness to one who has wronged us is to give a gift not only to the forgiven, but also to ourselves for our own healing.

Forgiveness

I forgive you because I am a teacher
Who first was a student and I can remember
How hard it was to learn a difficult subject.

I forgive your mother, who called the Academic Dean
And bitched at him about my behavior in class
As she probably had done to intimidate
Teachers at your former high school.

I forgive my Department Head for calling me up
And asking that I write an apology for teaching
Since in our department we are all interchangeable
And not even he has an ego any more.

I forgive whoever thinks education
Is still possible for a student who
Cannot read or write and is legally
Certified as disabled because
Being on the football team takes
Precedence over everything else.

What I cannot forgive is myself
For having accepted this job in the first place.

The act of forgiving is the ultimate act of mindfulness.
