I grew up in Christian fundamentalism, went to hell, came back, became a Presbyterian then a Buddhist Presbyterian, and now I'm a profane Presbyterian Zen Taoist -- not that I'm into labels or anything. Here's what I've learned so far: The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Three Tagmemics
Seven
Heartened by surgery,
The house a playpen, I pick at
Rubble in the carpet,
Beside myself with glee
And severe hiccups.
Three
Having mourned the silence,
Beard growing, boulders press
Down on the ribcage.
The body roiled by weeping,
The voice, exhausted.
Five
Resigned to be honest,
Knees broken, shoulders crimp
Out from the wheelchair
Under the strict rubric
Of an amiable recovery.

If an insect crawls
across my back, I run for
a mirror, and strip.
A soul at peace is a pool
on which reflections glimmer.
One learns from listening.
Listening takes less energy than speaking.
