Why Go to So Much Trouble?

A wall is harder to build than a house.
A sword is harder to sharpen than a scalpel.
A fence is harder to repair than a friendship.

So why do we go to so much extra trouble?

Three Sneezes

The Chinese built walls
Visible from outer space
To keep invaders out
And to confine their people.

Swords came lined with ancient
Coins to show what has been
Gained from this hierarchy
Of greasing the palm.

In the Shanghai market,
Fences still surround animals
Whether eels or rabbits
Or cats and dogs.

The Chinese have a saying –
“Mao Wenti” – which means
“No Problem!” as well
As its opposite.
