Bridges

We build a bridge
so we can cross a river.

Below the bridge,
below the water,
below the muddy bottom,
the earth spans the river, too,
joining both sides into one.

in the pre-photographic era, images came directly from our eyes to our brains and were part of our experience of reality. With the advent of photography, images were torn free from the world, snatched from the fabric of reality, and enshrined as separate entities. They became more like dreams. == Errol Morris, “Believing is Seeing,” 92.

What we see is not independent of our beliefs. Photographs provide evidence, but no shortcut to reality. It is often said that seeing is believing. But we do not form our beliefs on the basis of what we see; rather, what we see is often determined by our beliefs. Believing is seeing, not the other way around. – Errol Morris, “Believing Is Seeing,’ 93.
