First Experience

Memory is reductive.

It creates flash cards
of random events
and flips through them
when we recall one.

But no matter how good,
flash cards can never
resurrect the body
of the first experience.

What Flash Cards Do

Stanza by stanza
They defeat chance by telling
Similar stories.

Each face, heraldry
Of arms or birds, mimics its
Iconography.

Some worship one sign
And paint with sharp strokes the dye
That curls up its tail.

The flip side of each
Card sets perimeters for
The intangible.

To internalize
Language, cross over thresholds;
Shuffle back and forth.

An answer appears
About which everyone
Questions the meaning.

And these pass the time,
These alternate versions
That always stay hearts.

Joined at the hip are
Chance and mutability
To double each sentence.
