Unfamiliar Ground

When I enter unfamiliar ground,
I slow down and step carefully.

When the unfamiliar becomes known,
I move quickly without even looking.

What a pity it is to forget that
the universe is new every moment.

  1. In the Space Between

Once fallen, it takes a cane
    To tap out unfamiliar ground.

    Where a giant cherry oak
    Has been blasted by lightning,

    Its roots upturned and flailing
    Tentacles from an octopus,

Not to fall again takes skill,
Not to risk a fall is not to live.

    Charcoal burns on risen bread
But no longer to scent the cherry.
