Acorns

The tallest oak cannot ignore
the acorn that will replace it.

When we discover Tao inside us,
our children also take root.

Children of the Damned

The children with white eyes have gathered
Like owls around their parents whose minds

They can read. The children smile, compassionately,
As they confine their parents in nursing homes

Where they will be cared for, professionally,
And preserved until the money runs out.

The children form corporations on the internet
Where they buy and sell futures on the stock exchange.

Unencumbered by the weight of memory, the children
Know that it’s time to start over, from scratch,

And nobody’s hiring anybody over the age of twenty
Because the present is so much better than the past.
