A Bell Rings Once

A bell rings once
in the distance.

A church bell?
A temple bell?
A clock bell?
A dinner bell?
An alarm bell?

How can we tell
from just one clap?

For those who know its sound,
one note is enough.

That and listening, of course.

The Siren

The siren goes off each Wednesday
Over the Kerr-McGhee Nuclear Power Plant
That sits atop Lake Dardanelle.

This is a test, it is only a test,
To ensure that the Emergency Warning System
Works in the event of a meltdown,

Or in the event of any national emergency,
Such as a terrorist attack, or a tornado,
Or some unforeseen apocalypse.

Baleful and forlorn, its sweeping wail
From its rusty throat warps the airwaves
As if a warning could save us.

Unlike the sirens Ulysses heard
Whose singing drove sailors mad,
This just lets us know ahead of time
We are all about to die.
