Five Escapes

The escape from childhood
leads into independence.

The escape from independence
leads into distractions.

The escape from distractions
leads into inner silence.

The escape from inner silence
leads into awareness of Tao.

There is no escape from Tao,
only escape from awareness.

    Bedazzle an egghead’s crown.
    Rubik’s cube sneezes.

    Puppet strings are cut.
    Icy curtains frazzle, shade
    Into slate ballasts.

    The warped escape their
    Judgment, bending boomerangs
    So little comes home.

    Each buried child swathes
    Mounds of early death, portals
    To the darkest love.
