Our Tiny Corner

Humans will never be able
to destroy all life on the planet.
The universe is too fecund.

Even our tiny corner of it.

“Nature knows no death,” Werner von Braun said,
“Only transformation.” What does that pixel

Of H2O know, I wonder, beaded up as sweat
On Mars? Can the pores adjust to toxins,

Or is consciousness and all its delights
Obsolete as owl entrails dangling from oak?

In a corner of my kitchen, a decomposed
Mouse fuses with the parquet floor,

Its skeletal remains inseparable from wax
Buildup beneath the stove. No eyes, no snout,

Just fur with poison in each fiber, the smell
    Unforgettable and impossible to remove.
