Designed to Heal

Meanness is not hereditary.
Compassion is not a disease.

We're not designed to hurt.
We're designed to heal.

After his mother died, his father stopped shaving.

“Let’s bury her out on the lawn,” his father said
On the fairway, “Or out by the Fifth Tee
If I ever make it there,” and he saluted,
Shading his eyes with his right hand.

A burly thicket of hair grew into a beard.

Then after his father died, they cut off the beard
And buried it outside his picture-window.
Although each bristle was tested for drugs,
    The beard continued to grow.

    No accounting for spontaneous combustion.
