What Lives, Dies


What lives, dies.
Two ends of the same branch.
One is a root. One is a limb.

Beyond living and dying
lies treeless ground.

    Incendiary divorce
    Turns into burn lines.
    Where once a forest of pines
    Needled the aloe,
    Now ashes baste in the heat
    As flood plains level the town.
