Silence Has Its Own Life

Silence has its own life.
Emptiness is its home.
Wisdom is its companion.
I am its student.

Disaffected youth crouch in a pack,
Slack-jawed, baring their teeth, ready to snap,
Wired and made rabid by love on the wrack,
With nouveau torture yawning its bear trap.

They ghost as life forms that perished in fire,
In earthquake or land mine, in sudden flood.
Surrounding with penitence the barbed wire,
Impotent pine-needles nip at the bud.

They have rooted through crust and shell, sending
Feelers out, leapt synapses of the mind,
    Until reluctant species took mending
And transformed into yet another kind.

All this on the dance floor, disco beach ball
Passed overhead, planet earth a close call.
