Desire and Wisdom

Desire is an urge to explore,
to experience more deeply.

Some desires are best followed.
Some are best left undone.

Knowing the difference
is the work of wisdom.

    Repulsion is vertiginous nausea
    Both intellectual and physical

    Plummeting from a great height
    Down to unimaginable depths

    Asphyxiated by compression
    Or torpedoes from submarines

Spun about in this whirlpool only
    Later passion becomes compassion

    There is no wisdom
    Without caution.

    There is no caution
    Without calculation.

    In passion, one plus one
    Lets nobody take sides.

    Calculation arises from
    Cold-blooded cruelty.

    Cruelty is the flip
    Side of love.

All too often, wisdom’s little more than
    Monday-Morning Quarterbacking.

    Abstractions are like
    Quicksand

    People think they know
    What they mean

    Connect the dots to find
    The Pleiades

    What stories they tell
    Mariners at sea

    On solid ground
    Lightning strikes
