Natural Disasters

Hurricanes form over the ocean,
and wind smashes the coasts with hammers of rain.

Lightning sparks a conflagration,
and mountainsides burn away in tongues of fire.

The earth quakes along deep lines,
and cities collapse like water off a shaking dog.

And yet our greatest suffering often arrives
in the thoughtless acts of those we love.

  1. Luck

I am determined to be happy,
    No matter the weather,
    No matter the biopsy,
    No matter the student beggars
Rattling their cups for better grades.

I am determined to be happy,
    No matter the low wages,
No matter the way people at work
Regard me as on my way out
    And celebrate the new hires.

I am determined to be happy,
Because I see how the poor
    Wander homeless among thugs,
Because I watch that oil slick
    Destroying fish in the wetlands.

I am determined to be happy
Because I have no right to be,
    Living where plenty fattens up
Gluttons who have robbed the other
    Countries of natural resources.
