Nothing
ReplyDeleteDon't mistake your nothing
For nothing. It is not the small
Pear held by withered hands
Of an old woman who has been
Beaten and shouted down for
Daring to speak her mind. Her
Nothing weighs more than yours,
Because she has no hope that the law
Can protect her, or that her words
Can roost in any bookseller's shop
To hearten or endear other
Younger women in the struggle
To breathe behind burkas and walls.
Perfumed and ripe for burial.
