Short-Lived


There are very few people in our lives -- especially close friends and family -- who we will know across the entire arc of their earthly span, from birth to death.

This is a blessing, because the death of anyone younger than we are is a tragedy.

    The heart will mend the heart, stem
    Cells regenerating tissue in cavities
    Allowing hemoglobin to course
    Through this alluvial pump.

    The heart will mend the heart, mental
    Synapses reconnect and the memory
    Of how to use the tongue return,
    Along with swallowing and speech.

    The heart will mend the heart, eyes
    Will startle at the ability to read
    Letters of farewell that transform
    To greetings of miraculous rebirth.

    With my one true eye sometimes clear
    May I reach you who have now
    Gone beyond all hope of rescue --
    Dust beneath bellies of sheep in a cave.
