Silencing the Birds

If I clap my hands near a tree full of noisy starlings, they will fall silent.

But what noise can I make to silence the chirping in the tree of my mind?

    Having tasted dragon’s blood
He can hear all of nature
Singing the future of the planet

    Whippoorwills through pines become
    Clarinets in the string section
    Heading toward extinction

Now there’s a flute. Here come
    The horns, brash and brazen
    Fanfare in a parade

    So little remains in winter
    Thin reeds wheedle razor
    Sharp shrieks down steel tracks

    Dissonance in a dry land
    Jets swoop overhead
    On a bombing run
