Years and Years of Children

Year after year, schools fill up with children.

Year after year, they sprout like fields of new flowers.

Year after year, new faces appear at every desk, fresh and young and curious.

Year after year, they show up to carry forward our hope for a future we will not see.

  1. Silence

John Cage knew that there was no
Silence: Our world is full of sound.

Mahler withdrew to listen to nature
And wrote about the death of children.

What Ingmar Bergman meant by silence
    Was the non-responsiveness of God.

Indifference is not silent but cruel
In a marriage heading toward divorce.

Thrown back on yourself, only within
Can you find God or godlessness.

Like a DJ playing his favorite tunes
I send these lines into that silence

    Still hoping somebody might hear
My song and send a reply.
