Reach Across

When I cultivate a friendship
with someone who is not like me,
both of us grow richer.

Song--Proteus

Proteus by the sea
Dissembles prophesy
By changing to birds
That shepherd goat herds
Cascading toward the lea,
Shouting, “Proteus by the sea!
Proteus by the sea!”

Protean diversity
Allows a nation to see
In its multiple kinds
Of peoples those binds
That strengthen its unity,
Shouting, “Proteus by the sea!
Proteus by the sea!”

Whether lion or snake he be,
Whether leopard or pig he be,
He merges with others
By knowing what smothers
Unique identity,
Shouting, “Proteus by the sea!
Proteus by the sea!”
