Without My Help

When I make a decision to change something in my life, my life takes over and begins the work of bringing that change into being.

My job is to show up every day, ready to do my part -- whatever that turns out to be.

When I do, I'm always amazed to discover how much my life can accomplish without my help.

the cricket sings after rain,
night air moves through the window to brush skin, the cat breathes, curls closer, and the feathers
of strange birds shift under a tossed head,
suddenly emptied of sorrows
as water tips out of a leaf.

I may lay names on things,
but "mine" is none of them;
this name alone comes as a gift to me
the cat who chose me as its bedmate,
insect as its audience,
god as his beloved.
